Autumn in Izu is the season of hot springs and red maples. Shuzenji in particular lets you enjoy a riverside town and red leaves together. Here is a rough guide to timing and how to spend your visit.
When to go
Around Shuzenji, the leaves are generally at their best from mid-November to early December. This varies with each year's temperatures, so check the latest information before you go.
Enjoy it on foot
- The onsen street along the Katsura River: river, bridges and red maples together
- Shuzen-ji Temple: autumn leaves in the temple grounds
- The bamboo path: green bamboo against red maples
Evening illuminations
In the autumn season, some spots are lit up at night, with a more magical atmosphere than by day. Whether and when this happens differs from year to year, so check in advance.
Host's tip: Autumn brings crowds and traffic. Getting up early and walking in the morning gives you quiet scenery.
Leaves and hot springs together
After your walk, warm up in a hot spring. Some of the town's inns offer day-use baths.
Another treat: the sea at Numazu
In autumn the air clears, and Mt. Fuji starts to look beautiful across the sea. You can enjoy autumn leaves and Fuji on a single trip.
Shuzenji is easy to reach from Numazu via Mishima. Each of our Numazu houses sleeps up to 8. Booking direct on our website is the best rate.
