Most visitors see Mt. Fuji from a lake or a train window. Around Numazu you can see something rarer: Fuji rising straight above the sea, with fishing boats and small islands in front of it. Here are the places we send our guests, and how to give yourself the best chance of a clear view.
1. Uchiura Bay and Awashima Island
The coast road south of Numazu follows a string of calm coves. From the shores of Uchiura Bay you see the small, round Awashima Island with Mt. Fuji behind it, the classic Numazu view. It is especially beautiful early in the morning, when the water is still. Combine it with a visit to Awashima Marine Park or Izu-Mito Sea Paradise.
2. Osezaki Cape
At the western tip of Numazu, Osezaki is a narrow spit of land reaching into Suruga Bay, with a small shrine surrounded by juniper trees. From here, Mt. Fuji appears across the water to the north. It is a popular spot with photographers and divers, and it is quiet outside of summer weekends. It takes a while to get there by road, so plan it as a half-day drive along the coast.
3. Senbonhama beach and Byuo
Closer to central Numazu, the long pine-lined beach of Senbonhama and the observation deck of Byuo, the giant floodgate at Numazu Port, both offer Fuji views on clear days. These are easy to reach on foot or by bus from Numazu Station, and they pair well with a seafood lunch at the port.
4. Izu Panorama Park
For a view from above, take the ropeway at Izu Panorama Park in Izunokuni. From the hilltop terrace you look across the Izu hills, Suruga Bay and Mt. Fuji. It is about a 30-minute drive inland from Numazu.
When to go
- Season: late autumn to early spring (roughly November to March) gives the clearest skies and a snow-capped peak. In summer, haze and clouds often hide the mountain.
- Time of day: early morning is best. Clouds tend to build up around Fuji as the day warms.
- Check before you go: look at the weather and live webcams of the Fuji area. If the summit is clear at dawn, head out early.
Host's tip: on winter mornings, step outside before breakfast. The air over the bay is often at its clearest just after sunrise, and many of our guests say it was the best moment of their trip.
Make it a stay, not a day trip
Because the best views come early in the morning, staying overnight near the bay makes a big difference. Our houses in Enoura are close to the Uchiura coast road, so you can be at the water at sunrise and back for breakfast.
maicca numazu1 and numazu2 are fully renovated traditional houses in Enoura, Numazu, for up to 8 guests each. Self check-in, a full kitchen and a garden BBQ. Book directly for the best rate.
